Well, as with many things in life, true mastery of a subject cannot be attained without understanding leading theories behind it.

If you understand about enharmonic equivalents, that will help you learn to transpose. If you understand about different musical modes, you’ll come to recognize a piece that has been written in a particular mode. And this can help you sight-read or learn it more effectively. If you understand the basic structure of a typical musical form (a sonatina, for example), you’ll know what to expect when you encounter one. And so on.

Scales: Oh, those tedious scales! There must be very few piano students on Earth who have never complained about learning their scales. Why do piano teachers insist on this torture system for their students? Several reasons.

For one thing, scales are a very basic means of developing proper form and nimbleness with your fingers. For another thing, familiarity with a scale will help you when you encounter a work written in that key, especially one with lots of accidentals. And this will also help you learn to transpose pieces from one key to another. Having your scales “in your fingers” will also help you in learning to sight-read, and to improvise as well.

Sight Reading: And speaking of sight-reading, why do you need to do it? If practice makes perfect, then why develop the skill of sitting down and playing effectively without practicing? Because, although you should always strive to practice a piece to perfection, there will be occasions when you’ll be called upon to play with little or no advance notice. If you are already accustomed to doing this in your lessons, you won’t be intimidated by such a request.

Improvisation: The same is true of improvisation, or the related practice of playing “by ear.” Especially if you begin playing jazz or rock or related styles, the ability to improvise or play by ear will be crucial to your success. If you have already been accustomed to doing this from your early piano-playing days, you’ll be ready to meet this challenge.

Recitals: Some students are terrified of performing at recitals. They go to lessons all year, they practice uncomplainingly, they make good progress… But they wish they could avoid proving it to all their friends and family members! Why does their teacher insist upon a public performance?

Answer: To give them a chance to overcome this very fear. While one can certainly play for one’s own enjoyment, the ultimate goal of learning to play piano is to share the joy of music with others. Recognizing the names of the bass and treble staff notes can be fun and rather simple. Before we begin, remember that the treble staff is where you will find all your right hand notes, and the bass staff is where you will find all your left hand notes. All you have to do is memorize a word for each note, like this. Bass staff space notes: *A C E G (All Cows Eat Grass) Bass staff line notes: *G B D F A (Good Boys Do Fine Always) Treble staff space notes: *F A C E (This spells “face”) Treble staff line notes: *E G B D F (Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge) *The first word/letter is always the bottom of the staff. Now the fun begins. Here are some simple and fun ways to memorize these notes. 1) Speed Run: See how fast you can say the names of the notes. Try doing it first with the words, and then with the letter names only. 2) Reverse Speed Run: Now see how fast you can practice saying the letter names in reverse. This is a great way to see just how well you know the letter names. 3) Say-n-Play: While sitting at your piano, say the letter name out loud and then play it on the keyboard. If you are using flashcards, mix them up so that you can select a card at random and do the same activity. This is a very good memorization activity. 4) Play Them All: Now comes a fun way to test your knowledge. Say out loud the note then play all of those notes on the entire keyboard. For example, you have selected the note “A.” Play all the “A” keys on the entire keyboard. 5) Flash Cards: Make a set of flash cards with one note on a staff on one side, and the answer on the other side. (Don’t forget to specify which staff: bass or treble with the bass or treble clef sign.) The sooner one can memorize the names of the notes and recognize where they are found on the keyboard, the more enjoyment that can be found playing the keyboard. Just like you learned the ABC’s for reading you’ll be a great success at learning your ABCDEFG’s for the keyboard. Does anyone still doubt that the Internet has deeply changed practically every aspect of modern life? Thanks to PDFs and other Web-based publishing formats, the same is true of music instruction and notation. Like the recording industry, the world of music instruction is changing dramatically. It’s not my place to say whether these developments are good or bad. Whatever they are, they are here to stay, so it’s best for us recovering Luddites to accept these changes and move on.

We all have learned some of basic music skills in school Some of us may have even learned how to play an instrument or two! There are times we just want to be the pop singer for fun.A piano keyboard has 88 keys (notes), with seven octaves (sets) beginning with the 6 (A) tone on the left, the lowest octave and a 1 (C) tone at the right, the highest octave. Usually, you play the notes in the treble clef for high notes on top of the music with your right hand, and play bass clef for low notes on bottom of the music with your left hand.

I hate the word “normal” how can a word that has such a wide range, have such an impact? What IS meant by normal anyway? In high school, students have such peer pressure to be like everybody else. Who wants to be normal anyway? Who wants to look like everybody else? I like to say: Normal is a setting on a clothes washer. Those of us who have disabilities do things differently from the norm. We may also look different. Try to understand that we are people first, and accepting ourselves as we are, will help others accept us.As an adult with cerebral palsy, there are things I do that make my life easier. For instance since I take a bunch of different medicine as well as vitamins and other supplements, I devised a way to take my pills, that solves two issues. I put peanut butter on my finger to stick a pill on, thus avoiding the slippery issue of my fingers no longer working like they used to. Then I put the pill in my mouth, and it makes it easier for me to swallow the pills without it going under my tongue, or into the cheek area. And I do that until I take all that are in my pill boxes that my assistants fill every week. I’ve found, through trial and error, that regular creamy peanut butter has the best consistency. Organic peanut butter is too oily and sloppy. Some brands of Hummus work, especially the dry mix that you add water to. So does frosting – but if it’s too sweet it can bother your throat. One guy I know discovered mashed potatoes worked for him. He’s Irish, so he has them at every meal. When I was a young kid my mom used to put my valium in a piece of Wonder bread and I would swallow it with a bite of bread. Later we tried jam, but like frosting, it bothered my throat.Let your children be children. In the sixties, my mom had me in tutoring programs four days a week. There was also speech therapy that did me very little good. I hated it all! To this day, the overarching memory I have of my childhood is a blur of me and mom in the car. One summer I was planning to take piano lessons, and my Occupational Therapist told my mom it would be a waste of my time and her money. But mom simply said, “If she wants to do it, she can. My piano teacher had taught blind students to play by putting their hands over her hands and letting them feel what it was like. She used this technique on me and the OT had to eat her words when I showed up for school that September, able to move most of my fingers independently! It was something I enjoyed. I took lessons in high school too. My mother and I scheduled our lessons back to back, neither of us was very good, but we enjoyed it. Many years later on the internet list for people with CP, we got to chatting about music and singing. So many of us had played some kind of instrument, or sang in church. My speech actually got better after I began chanting in college. My breath control got stronger, I sat straighter, and I could usually get two lines of every four lines in a stanza in the morning chant that lasted an hour. So, don’t let anybody tell you or your child they can’t.As a mater of fact, my parents never let me say “I can’t…” this was mostly a good thing, though at times it was exasperating trying to please my mother who sought perfection at every level from both me and my sister. I got sick of trying so hard, mostly with my speech. But in those days, there were no home computers, (my dad had one at work and it took up entire rooms!) no talking devices, no laptops. So, balance is key. You want your child to grow up to be independent, but don’t harp on her at every step.
